My Journey

PH_edited.jpg

Born in the lush hills of Meghalaya, I was raised in a matrilineal society, where my first real introduction to textiles came from my grandmother’s loom. Those quiet moments, watching fabric take shape thread by thread was my first window into the world of fabric and making, an influence that still shapes my design perspective today.

This intuitive start led me to study Knitwear Design at NIFT, New Delhi. My graduation collection, developed in collaboration with Leo Sansini, explored men’s knitted blazers and jumpers. The work combined engineered knit structures with tailored silhouettes, drawing on the geometric “mikron” diamond motifs found in the Dakmanda, a traditional Garo textile.

Since then, my journey has taken on many shapes. I started at the Department of Textiles in 2017, working closely with indigenous weaving traditions and exploring how cultural patterns could be reimagined in a contemporary context. That balance of cultural integrity and contemporary relevance continues to shape how I think and create.

Over the years, I’ve built a six year career running my own bespoke fashion label, designing everything from womenswear to kidswear and menswear, a bit of everything, really. I never wanted to stay in one box, and the intention was never to stay within a single category but to treat each project as a new material conversation, deepening my fluency across the full spectrum of design.

Running a label also meant building business fluency. From sourcing and supplier relations to client facing roles and operational management, I learned fashion as both a creative and commercial practice. I got to experience the unglamorous (but essential!) side of fashion, which eventually led me to pursue an MBA at the London College of Fashion, where I specialised in luxury fashion business, with a focus on strategy, supply chain, and global market dynamics.

A year ago, I chose to step away from operations for a period and move into luxury retail with to better understand customer behaviour in the UK from a ground-level perspective. Working closely with clients, particularly through one-to-one interactions and styling, I gained a deeper insight into how people engage with product, make decisions, and respond to experience. This exposure, especially within menswear, sharpened my understanding of the relationship between product, context, and consumer psychology.

Moving across operations, business, creative practice, and retail has given me a more rounded view of the industry. Each space has informed the other, shaping how I think about both product and performance, and allowing me to approach my work with greater clarity and intention.

Beyond Design

Beyond design, I'm someone who really enjoys creating a sense of home. I love cooking and filling my space with things that feels warm, colourful and lived-in. Flowers make me happy (Lilies, always), and I'm naturally drawn to bright interiors and anything that brings in a bit of colour.

Painting is something I naturally return to when I want to slow down and reconnect with myself. For me, it’s less about the final outcome and more about letting my thoughts settle and being present in the process. One of my favourite pieces is a playful painting I made of a smiling sun with wide eyes and bee-like antennae. It hangs in my room as a small daily reminder to begin each day with lightness, colour and a bit of playfulness.
